It’s happening – before I went into labour

What a night, I’m glad it’s finally over! In the last weeks of pregnancy sleeping has for sure become more difficult and uncomfortable, but last night beat them all. I don’t feel like I slept at all. I also feel some weird pain in my lower back, probably from all the weird positions I was putting myself in during the night to feel at least a bit comfy.

It’s Monday and I am due on Saturday, so it’s our last „free“ week. Therefore we have a lot of activities planned that we know won’t be able to go to and enjoy for some time once the baby arrives. We also have a few more things to arrange.

The past days I’ve been desperately looking for coconut water which I want to have at hand when in labour for hydration and to replenish lost minerals, but my favourite brand has been out of stock everywhere. We decide to do groceries for the whole week and have one more look. Lucky me, coconut water back in stock! Three bottles it is. After the supermarket we stop at the local farm to buy some eggs, such source of protein cannot be missing for the postpartum period.

In the car I start to feel somehow uncomfortable. I have difficulty finding a position in which my lower back doesn’t hurt. I mention this to my husband and he goes like: „well, you know what they say, the first symptoms of going into labour can be he same as the symptoms before getting your period“. „Well yes, so I’ve heard, but come on, I’m about to be a first time mom and they were all saying it would come rather later than sooner.“

After we come back home, my husband starts another meal prep (he’s been stuffing our freezer with goodies the past days) and I head to my appointment for facial treatment. Who knows when will be the next time I’ll be able to come. At this point I already feel mild contractions, but I suppose it is just my uterus, getting all ready. I’ve had some Braxton Hicks contractions before in the last weeks. The contractions are not really painful, more like uncomfortable.

However, at the end of the session, while lying down, resting with a face mask, things get quite heated. The contractions come more often and they are more intense. For the first time I am starting to believe I am, in fact, in labour. F*ck. I still manage to handle them lying down, with the help of some weird moves (luckily the lady is away as she wanted me to enjoy these last minutes of relaxation, yep, feeling super relaxed at this moment 😀).

The ride back home is about twenty minutes and in that time I get three contractions. Manageable while driving (read more about driving in pregnancy here), but strong enough that I have no doubt I am in labour. When I get back home it’s about 3 pm, my husband is in the kitchen, still cooking. Already at the doorstep, I am telling him “yep, I think it is really happening”. He finishes his lovely moussaka and heads to the basement to bring a hot tub we had rented from our midwife. It’s time to inflate it upstairs to be ready when the right time comes. Now let’s see if everything I did as birth prep will be of use.

  1. […] We choose some light-hearted comedy as I can’t focus fully, sometimes (more and more often) I need to get up, walk around the living room and breathe through the contractions. The kitchen counter helps a lot, too. I lean against it and move my hips intuitively to find some relief, especially in the lower back that’s been hurting me since I woke up in the morning. […]
