“Everything looks fine.” – The frustrating diagnosis of unexplained infertility

“Everything looks fine.” – that’s definitely something you don’t want to hear from a specialist at the fertility clinic after a year of trying for a baby without any success. All you want to know is what the hell is wrong. Well, that’s exactly what we got – the frustrating diagnosis of unexplained infertility. However, is it really a diagnosis?

Our experience with the fertility clinic

To me it sounds more like the doctor is saying “sorry, we don’t really know what’s wrong here”. The only thing they did for me was to check on the ultrasound whether I ovulated. Well, thanks a lot, I already knew that thanks to the Fertility Awareness Method. Then I requested to check whether my Fallopian tubes were open. On top of that, I requested some blood tests for specific hormones and vitamins. All of that was my own initiative, it didn’t come from the fertility clinic.

After the hysterosalpingography (HSG, an X-ray test to outline the internal shape of the uterus and show whether the Fallopian tubes are blocked), the clinic suggested we’d wait for another six months. We used this time to nourish ourselves, to get healthier, I practiced fertility yoga, meditations and other holistic practices some of which I describe in my free e-book “Holistic Remedies to Support Your Fertility”. I felt like I was on the right track, however, after the timeframe of six months, I still wasn’t pregnant.

“IUI is your only option”

So here we are, back at the clinic. I noted a few things I wanted to have checked further, but to my surprise we were handed a brochure with information about IUI and that was it. No explanation, no willingness to test further. They said other tests would be a waste of money (for the insurance company) and when we said we would pay them out of the pocket, they refused anyways without giving a proper explanation. They said IUI or eventually IVF was our only option. So we left, frustrated, feeling hopeless and helpless, having nobody to support us on our journey.

After some time we collected ourselves and kept going, finding our own way. In the end it took us almost another year to get pregnant, but it was all worth it. Today we have a beautiful baby girl that was conceived naturally. There’s lots of work behind, but also lots of love and strength.

You are not alone

If this story sounds familiar to you, maybe you are also feeling helpless, not knowing which direction you should be heading next, feel free to reach out to me. I am always willing to dig deeper. Your path might be different and it might be an IUI or IVF journey and that’s completely fine. Just make sure it is your own journey, your own decision, not something that was forced upon you. I support women also on their IUI or IVF journey as even in this process you want to make your body as healthy as possible. An IVF transfer ≠ a living baby, unfortunately many of you already know that.
